Young Food Writer of the Year
16-07-201217-year-old Lucy Roxburgh from south London has won the Guild of Food Writers 2012 ‘WriteIt!’ Competition. The annual competition, is open to entrants aged up to 18. Entrants write a non-fiction food feature of around 750 words.
The judges, Karen Barnes, Lucas Hollweg and Bee Wilson, were unanimous in their verdict on Lucy’s feature The Venetian Pizzeria, “a great evocation of both the place and the food … nicely paced, detailed, but not overdone … capturing the appetite and sense of excitement.”
In her review Lucy wrote, “Woven baskets piled high with marzipan fruits – sticky, sweet and colourful ... Crisp linzer biscuits dusted with icing sugar and oozing jam. Piles of deep scarlet dried chillies, tied in bundles like flowers ...”
The judges also highly commended: Barkaat Ahmed (14) from Birmingham and Matthew Carsey (10) from East Yorkshire and Natalie Haslam (17) from Staffordshire and Freya Smith (13) from Bristol.
