Yorkshire-based Steenbergs has added a new organic paste, combining vanilla powder, seeds and extract, to its range of Madagascan Vanilla products developed for home cooking.
An exotic spice, second in price only to safron, vanilla is harvested from the one orchid to yield edible fruit. It grows only in a few sub tropical locations around the globe and the pods require labour-intensive nurturing.
Family-run Steenbergs' fairtrade vanilla comes from northern Madagascar where growers use traditional farming methods on small plots of 25 vines, pollinating each orchid blossom by hand and then conditioning the pods over a period of 3 months to create a “rich, mellow, intensely perfumed flavour and aroma.”
100ml of the extract costs £7.50. Villa pods cost from £2.24
