The Old Brewery Tavern at ABode Canterbury, opened in September 2006, is the second Michael Caines Tavern (along with The Well House, Exeter). However, it is our first wholly purpose-designed and –built tavern, created precisely according to our beliefs about what a great modern British pub should be in every way. Michael is hugely enthusiastic about this exciting development. "The tavern is part of our national history and culture, and dates back to the earliest examples of hospitality in these islands. Archaeological evidence of 'tabernas' has been found in Roman Britain cities such as Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter), Durovernum Canticorum (Canterbury) and elsewhere. Historically, tabernas – which became taverns – have been places that served to dispense food, drink and good cheer. This is the tradition that we are continuing today."

The Old Brewery Tavern may look back to historical antecedents, but it is wholly contemporary in design, outlook, approach and style. With its striking sliding glass windows that allow us to open to the sunshine whenever it may appear, and with its decking and bright modern furnishings, the courtyard area of the Old Brewery Tavern is anything but 'old' in feel. A comfortable, more discrete lounge area contrasts this, with its warm modern fireplace, while wooden tables and chairs in the central area retain the feel of traditional British pub. At nighttimes, the atmosphere changes completely, all over again, with atmospheric lighting, live music and DJ nights.

Food, glorious food - The Old Brewery is most certainly not a 'gastro-pub' (whatever that is), but unashamedly 'gastro-cool', serving just the sort of foods the today's diners are seeking: solid good food prepared from fresh, locally sourced quality ingredients. We have a Catch of the Day and offer local fish and meats such as Sussex beef and Romney Marsh lamb cooked over the open-plan char-grill in the Brewery courtyard. We offer sensational burgers, antipasti platters, salads, pies, hotpots and more: these are foods that are never overly complicated but which really satisfy.

Express Lunch at the Old Brewery Tavern offers a 3-course Lunch with a choice of starters, mains (including vegetarian option) and desserts. The aim is to be able to serve this within an hour.
